Mareterra, art on the horizon in Monaco
Mareterra: Renzo Piano’s artistic vision in Monaco
Born from the sea, combining architectural audacity and Mediterranean elegance, Mareterra is the latest masterpiece by renowned architect Renzo Piano, recently completed on the shores of the Principality of Monaco. A true urban extension over the sea, this sustainable neighborhood combines innovation, luxury, and nature in a rare harmony between urban planning and landscape.
But Mareterra is not just an environmental engineering feat: it is also a showcase for art. Among the bright interiors opening onto the Mediterranean, the Hadjer Gallery is honored by the presence of master tapestries by Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger from its collections.
Modern art in a setting of glass and sea
The interiors of the residences, sleek and bathed in natural light, showcase two major works from the modern repertoire. On raw concrete walls, the organic and colorful power of Calder’s forms dialogues with the minimalist furniture. Further on, the rhythmic, industrial structure of Fernand Léger evokes the working world, in a surprisingly gentle contrast to the calm sea visible through the large bay windows.
These monumental tapestries, woven in the Aubusson tradition, take on their full meaning here: they are not merely decorative, but become integral players in the space. They capture and reflect the light, giving a tactile dimension to an interior designed as a livable work of art.
A sustainable and cultural project
In addition to its ecological ambitions (green roofs, soft mobility, renewable energies), Mareterra has a strong cultural vision.
By integrating works of art into everyday life, the project makes aesthetics an essential component of the home. The presence of these two major figures of 20th-century art is no coincidence: Calder, the inventor of the mobile, and Léger, the poet of machines, embody a bridge between nature, movement, and modernity.
It is in this spirit that Mareterra was designed: a balance between technology, poetry, and respect for life.
Galerie Hadjer is honored to contribute to this unique alchemy between architecture and art, forging links between the great names in art history and the exceptional places that house them.
